Move Over Orkut, Rediff is Here

Orkut, took the social networking scene by storm, it created the same movement that Linked IN had done sometime back in the Business to Business networking industry, but what Rediff is doing is not only unclear to me, but a bit confusing. Though a DESI avtaar is needed, but then having a mix of Social and B2B in the same space, well maybe it works.. This week in My article in the Indian Express, I look at the Redidff's Avtar of the Orkut space, called Rediff Connexions.

What amazes me, is that two international companies have been chosen to do this, with every second company in India, now working on WiFi deployments, this comes as a surprising news. Also, where is the frequency available, Gurgaon, is already congested in the 2.4GHz band, I don't know how DLF plans to do this, but let's look forward to it.

You are Liable to Pay Government Debts - Proposal to Levy a Licence Fee on Every TV you own

From Yesterday's Times of India

Govt mulls Rs 500/year fee on every colour TV
Himanshi Dhawan | TNN

New Delhi: Television viewing could soon be a more expensive affair. The government is considering imposing a recurring annual ‘licence fee’ of Rs 500 for each colour television set, and Rs 200 for a black & white TV, owned by consumers as a bailout measure for the cash-strapped Prasar Bharati.
Sources in the information and broadcasting ministry said imposing the licence fee on consumers is among a slew of options before the government — others include making TV manufacturers and broadcasters pay up — all or some of which could be implemented. Part of the money raised will go into providing government pay scales and other benefits for the 38,000-odd Prasar Bharati employees. Sources said the licence fee plan alone could raise an estimated Rs 23,871 crore.
The government can, in fact, impose such a fee by invoking section 17 of the Prasar Bharati Act as recommended by the Sengupta Committee report. A final decision on the issue is expected to be taken at the Group of Ministers’ meeting on Wednesday.
The GoM is also likely to consider levying a 10% licence fee on television and radio manufacturers to raise an additional sum of Rs 896 crore as recommended by the Financial Restructuring Committee in 2005.
BAILOUT BITE
Annual licence fee of Rs 500 for colour TVs and Rs 200 for B&W TVs being studied Cash raised through proposed levy could be used to bail out Prasar Bharati Licence fee plan could raise about Rs 23,900 cr every year Final decision to be taken at Group of Ministers’ meeting on Wednesday ‘Service fee’ will help raise Rs 800 cr/yr
New Delhi: A Group of Ministers is considering a proposal for a ‘public broadcasting service fee’ on the lines of the telecom sector so that all players in the field are required to share the cost of making television available nationwide on a nondiscriminatory access basis. This is likely to raise another Rs 800 crore at 5% per annum from broadcasters.
The final option is payment of an annual grant by the government to the pubcaster to the tune of Rs 4,000 crore. The government has been pushed to the wall on the Prasar Bharati employees’ issue. According to a Supreme Court order, the ministry is expected to resolve service-related matters of Prasar Bharati employees by August 2.
Ensuring government pay scales, retirement and pension benefits, facilities like government accommodation and health benefits is estimated to cost the public exchequer Rs 81 crore. The report on capital and financial restructuring of Prasar Bharati pegs its outstanding liabilities to the tune of Rs 2,503 crore, as of April 2005.

So just imagine this, if the Government tomorrow, can't pay the bills for it's Met Department or the Air Quality Control department, they may just levy a charge of Rs. 500 per annum for you to breathe air.. Funny...

The Bling is Here - Samsung 18K Gold Phone

India is crazy about the Bling Factor. I have seen people use, and comment, about phones as if they were status symbols and not utility factors. Choosing a phone for me has been more about what I need in terms of functionality rather than what status it would portray, but a lot of them won't agree with me.

Finally out, the Samsung 18K Gold Cell phone, should be the latest in the Bling factor in India. For Commemoration of the 2008 Olympic Games, the P318+. In terms of features it's the same as the calculator model P318, but hey, it's the Bling that Matters.

HP Accessory Offer - Only for India (G-Spot Exclusive)

Accessories are one thing, where a lot of people don't go back to the Brand that manufactured your PC and or your Laptop, you tend to find cheaper alternatives. Now keeping in mind, that accessories are usually rebranded by companies like HP / IBM / Lenovo, and not manufactured by them, this seems to be an obvious choice.

The Current mail from HP today, makes the whole business a little interesting, the first accessory at full price (yes, 100% more than the market), and the second one only for $1 = Rs. 45, so you actually buy two accessories, for about 10% more expensive than you would from the market, and get assurance too.

The offer is only till 7/31, and includes Notebook Docking Stations, Mice, Power Adapter, Monitor Stands, Adjustable Notebook stands, Bags, Dicota Lock, Thumb Drive, Wireless Presenters, Web cameras, and yes, Wired Mice.

India Going Green

Solar Energy, Energy Saving have been a part and practice of my study, and some of my approach. I would love to turn around the whole house / office to run using Solar Power, but sadly the price of Solar Panels still keeps this out of my reach.

Recently, while going through the Times of India, on the 5th of June, I came across an Article about Green buildings, and it was an interesting read. Sadly the online edition does not carry pictures, but here are a few steps that you can make sure to go green.

1. Switch off all appliances not in use when leaving office at night. Yes, including the Water Cooler
2. Make sure all lights and fans are also off
3. Switch to CFL Lamps where ever possible from Incandescent Bulbs
4. Take that Adapter out, are you done charging your phone, take out that adapter.
5. Harvest Water, Re-Use rain water. Delhi is going to get a lot of rain this year, why not put buckets outside, when it rains, to give your car an After rain wash / clean.
6. Buy Proximity / Infrared switches for Verandah lights
7. Buy some solar lights for your lawn.

GERMAN PSYCHOLOGIST Dr Marc Stollreiter (above) led a team of 150 volunteers in fishing out 2 truckloads of plastic muck from Dal Lake on Sunday. "We mustn't leave everything to the government. People should come forward. This lake is theirs," Stollreiter said.

IMDAD SAQI of Valley Citizens' Council, who worked with Stollreiter, said: "This is a slap on our, and our government's faces. We must wake up. The Dal is dying." The lake has shrunk from its original 58 sq km to 11.05 sq km due to encroachments and dumping of waste.

Internet Advertising Starts Attracting Indian Small Businesses

JJMehta.com a portal that has been selling parallel import cameras, lenses, and mp3 players, has been one of the leaders in the online space in India. Though his site is nothing what you would expect it to be, but I think they make sizeable sales online. Every serious photographer has heard of them, and if you wanted a DSLR or a Lens, chances are you must have spoken to them. Cafe Gadgets, the portal from Esys, I wrote about it a few days back has also been picking up steam. Though there are no serious figures available, I tried to get in touch with their PR Team, but nothing happened. Both JJMehta.com and CafeGadgets have started advertising with Google Adwords very seriouslly. I think it is about time, India caught on in the Structured / Non Structured and a Brick & Mortar Business doing online Selling.

Screen Less MP3 Players - Time for Shuffle to Move Over

Whenever you thought of an MP3 Player in the early days, the thought of a scrolling window telling you what song was playing, and a few buttons to pull out more info were what would come to mind. Apple changed it, with the iPod shuffle, making the first screenless player to hit mainstream, not that others may not have tried it, but then, apple is known to be innovative. The other day, visiting the Music world at Ansal Plaza had me pause at a display window, where I saw a pendent like MP3 Player, against without display, at about 6000 bucks for a 512 MB version, it would make a perfect gift for your valentine, but then, every one now needs an MP3 Player, so iRiver, now fills in the gap with it's disney character based screenless mp3 player.. . wow.. where are we headed, next up, an mp3 player built into your shorts.. hmmmm interesting.. what would it sing, I am stinky, I am stinky..

The player itself seems like nothing but three spheres glued together. Each ear has its own function - the left one for changing volume and the right one for advancing tracks. The 3.5mm headphone jack is on top of Mickey's head and the mini USB port is at the bottom. Available in 5 different colors (black, silver, white, blue & pink), the Mplayer is slated to ship this month throughout S. Korea.

The iphone can be the most hyped gadget launch in the industry for a very long time, or maybe it is really going to create history, I know that I want it, and am waiting paitiently for it to come out, I know all my geek friends want it, well the price when it does come out will decide all this, but in the meanwhile, Steve Jobs as the Messiah, and his followers with Ipod's / Imacs / Ibooks in the above picture can make you laugh, and the video is worth a watch, at Tech Crunch

Good Bye Express Money & Some News

If most of you who read my articles in the Express money have been wondering where I am and what is up with my Articles, also no updates on my blog, well, Express Money will not be carrying Tech2. The Marketing team at Indian Express was not very gung ho about the Tech2 column, and now I am being shifted to the Sunday Express, hopefully the first article comes out this week on the 10th of June, so let's look forward to that. Thanks to every one who has been a well wisher and an avid fan reading all my articles, as someone said

I think there is lot lot to learn from you everytime i read your article or your mail i really feel very inspired

Well I will be back soon, in the meanwhile I have been tied down badly at the work front, with one of the major Internet providers in the country playing dirty games with my company, and hence have not been able to blog for quite some time.

On 1st June of this year, I launched my Angel Investment company called "Fat Guy Ventures", I have already invested in a brilliant new project, and will keep you updated on it through the blog.

Also, I have now started writing for Outlook Business Magazine, and one of my articles is already out, will have it linked here in a day or so in PDF Format, as Outlook Business still does not have a website.

Some good offers have come my way from other leading national dailies, and the Radio show has been going well, but it's time to get back to blogging.

An Alarm Clock I want !!

The Song Jago Re Jago re from Lagaan has always been my way of waking up, what better than to tell you to Wake up. The only way I could do this till now was to load the Mp3 into my phone, and use the phone alarm clock, which by no means matches a real alarm clock. With my fondness of Retro Hardware, the Clock above, seems to be on my wishlist now, don't know how I will lay my hands on this.

Thailand’s Shin Satellite to start offering Internet services in India

Satellite Internet makes a lot of sense, though India is wiring up, and Broadband is becoming a reality for most of us across the Country, but still there are areas where broadband connectivity is not possible, the only alternative has been Satellite based Internet. Indian Players have included Bharti, Hughes, Shyam and an International Player based out of Singapore called Speedcast has wrapped up and ran off, the problem is, that all these links need an uplink from a regular ISDN / static IP line for the link to work, now if you had ISDN, why would you want to setup a Satellite link.

A great feasibility is to use your DTH Reciever coupled with a GSM Modem for the uplink to do an Internet Downlink, but I think the day before DD / Tata or Zee offer this is long away.

This news inHT Mint Live, brings a hope of relief for all those living in far of places and looking at hooking onto the Internet on high speed.

Entry Level HP Laser Printer Shortage in the Market

I am not sure if you would believe this, but this is right out of the horses mouth. I checked out each Sub Distributor in Nehru Place Market, The Largest Computer market in South Asia, and you can't find any HP entry Level Laser printer (USB or Network) in the market. Some Model revision, and there are no stocks.. Unbelievable that the largest selling Indian Laser Printer brand is out of stocks, for atleast 2 weeks.

Life Hacker: DIY Laptop Stand

WOW is what I can say, and am working on making myself one, if I do manage, then you will see the pictures here in a few days, but I find tihs a very sensible move, to manage the heat under the laptop, with my old habbit of not switching off the machine, and at times leaving it On in the Office, with Delhi's heat, this is something I really need to work on.

For more information on this DIY, read it online at Life Hacker

Ubuntu Studio is here

I have been both a big user, and a big fan of the Ubunut Linux and the whole concept is appealing to me. While going through a series of regular blogs / howto websites that I visit, I noticed that Ubuntu's variant for Artists (Graphic / Sound / Video), is out, so now if you are a startup and don't have the money to spend on all the software that is charged for on the Windows platform, and want to keep away from piracy, check out Ubuntu Studio.

If you need help in configuring it, for your environment, check out the article at HowtoForge.
